California rules to know
- California does not require a fishing license on public piers. Size and bag limits still apply.
- Since Jan 1, 2025 every operator of a motorized vessel, regardless of age, must carry a California Boater Card (rental and licensed captains exempt).
- Boats used in fresh water must display a Quagga and Zebra Mussel Fee sticker ($16, valid up to two years) next to the registration sticker.
For closures and rules check California State Parks, Division of Boating and Waterways.
